Form V: UCAS Talk Wed, April 24th @ 9:40 in Lecture Theatre

  • Anyone that is in anyway interested in the possibility of studying in the UK must attend this talk. You do not have to commit to anything but it is important that you inform yourself of the application process.
  • If you do not have Guidance at his time, sign up on the sheet on Careers noticeboard.
  • Check the “UCAS” section on the right of this page for further information.

VI – No UCAS offers?

If you haven’t received any offers, you have 2 more options in regards to courses.

One is  ‘Extra’, it means you can choose another course (one course at a time). Choosing a course with higher entry requirements would not be advisable. More details here

The second option would be later in the year, ‘Clearing’.

Clearing is a service available between July and September, but for most people it is used after the exam results are published in August. It can help people without a university or college place to find suitable vacancies on higher education courses.

If you are flexible and you have reasonable exam results, there is still a good chance you will find another course through Clearing.

UCAS – Deferring?

It’s quite a common practice to defer in the UCAS system.

Accepted applicants deferring for one year

Year Accepted applicants: Deferred % of Accepted applicants: Total
2010 defer to 2011 33,426 6.9% of 487,329
2009 defer to 2010 34,049 7.1% of 481,854
2008 defer to 2009 33,171 7.3% of 456,627
2007 defer to 2008 28,863 7.0% of 413,430
2006 defer to 2007 28,524 7.3% of 390,890
2005 defer to 2006 31,059 7.7% of 405,369
2004 defer to 2005 28,435 7.5% of 377,544

How do universities and colleges view deferred entry applications?

The value of gap year activities is widely documented and most universities and colleges will allow you to apply for deferred entry, but check with them before applying. When you apply, include details of your proposed gap year in your personal statement to support your application.

Q: I’ve already applied – can I defer my choice to next year?

A: If you want to defer your place, contact the university to discuss it with them. If they agree to defer it, they will let us know and we will update your application in Track.

You can only submit one application per academic year, so if you defer your application, you can’t apply again for the same year – any additional applications will be cancelled.
